Senior Match report – round 12 V Taylors Lakes

David Connell – senior coach

Round 12 saw a trip down to Taylors Lakes. It hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for us of late losing both away games in 2017 & 2018, so this was a game we were hungry to walk away with the W. Just the one change this week with Jono Hardman unavailable and Jarod Stephens from the under 19s making his debut for the club.

Kicking with the aid of a strong breeze in the first quarter we hit the score board early. We were able to score at will and ended up with 17 scoring shots in the first quarter, however didn’t take full advantage kicking 7.10. Although we were able to score we weren’t happy conceding 4 scoring shots from 5 entries and we felt our pressure wasn’t where it needed to be.

We came out in the 2nd quarter and improved in that area but it was until the back end of the quarter that we felt like we were on top, kicking the last 2 goals going into the main break was important and gave us a 27 point break.

After half time we flicked the switch and our defence lead by Simmons ,Matson, Choppa, Dowsett and Bennett were outstanding not conceding one goal in the 3rd and then holding firm in the last against the breeze with only 3 goals. Our Forward line started to open up with the main beneficiaries Allen kicking 8, Pretty kicking 4 and Marcy 3. Harward was great and had a heap of score involvements and first gamer Stephens showed signs of brilliance and looks like he will be a player of the future. This was topped off with the midfield taking full control with big men, A Scott and Gobbo controlling the air while Libba, Burns, Bartrop and Becker were running riot.

All in all it was a terrific performance and keeps the momentum going post queens birthday.

Once more box to tick next week V West Coburg before we hit the split round bye.

Under 19's

After a tough week in selection, we had finally put a team of 20 to face Keilor park at Keilor park. We had 7 of our best out for this game.
We started very slow and looked like it was going to be a close game. We had been out run and out skilled in the first half. We went in the main break 6 points up, with only 2 goals on the board.

After a severe rocket and a few positional changes, the boys responded. We came out and kicked 4 goals to nothing in the 3rd term to put a nice break into the last term. We ended up kicking away to have a strong 10 goal win and securing second spot on the table.

The most pleasing positive that came out of this game was the fact we had 7 of our best out, and the boys responded after being hit hard. This means our young men are learning to fight through tough times and able to take some strong instructions.

We now cannot drop out of the top 4, which means we are now finals bound.  Very exciting times.
