Senior Match report – round 16  v East Keilor

David Connell – senior coach

A Big round 16 clash with 1 v 2 being match of the round. Only the one change with Alessio Gobbo out of the side and Blair Cronin coming back in.

Game preparation was good and they’re was a final like atmosphere with a top 2 finish likely for the winner. However, we started slow with EK kicking the first 3 goals into the wind. We steadied half way through the quarter with the last 2 goals but more importantly we seemed to wrestle back momentum.

At ¼ time we addressed contested football. We were down minus 9 at the stoppages and this was resulting in us getting beat on the outside especially through both wings. Devine and Harward went to the wings to give us some more pace and we took control of the stoppages in the 2nd and although kicking into the breeze we managed to go into the half time break 9 points up.

The 3rd quarter saw a domination; however, we were unable to capitalize on this domination. The ball lived in our fwd half, but we could only manage 2 goals 8 behinds. (even though 2 of those behinds were goals, but let’s not go any further into the EDFL incompetence) We took a 29-point lead into the last BUT had left the door ajar

The last quarter was one we would all rather forget, and in a hurry! After Cronin kicked the first goal to put us 35 points up we basically capitulated under the pressure and momentum from EK. We had too many players go outside of their role and focus on themselves and it was the most undisciplined football we have played over the last 2 years. We gave up 3 goals directly from 50-meter penalties and were over run by 8 points.

A very disappointing day, we were 20 mins away from securing top spot and a double chance to now slipping to 3rd and the likely proposition of an elimination final in 3 weeks’ time.

We MUST pick up the pieces quickly and return to our best football over the next 2 weeks and hit the finals series in good form to give ourselves the best opportunity of having success.
