Senior Match report – round 8 v Hillside

David Connell – senior coach

Round 8 saw the senior side head to Hillside looking for our 5th win on the trot. A late change with Shannon Dowsett coming out of the side was a great opportunity to play an under 19 and Dylan Watts was given his 2nd senior game.

Our focus going into the game was to start strong, control the game in close at the contest and work hard without the football to support the back half and then spread hard and try and catch Hillside napping. The first half we were able to execute this to perfection. Kane Mulvaney was fantastic in the midfield nullifying Victor Micaleff and winning plenty of the footy in offensive positions. Forward of centre in the first quarter we lost some of our shape and were unable to isolate our forwards. We were able to put 4 goals on the board but didn’t take full advantage of our dominance. In the second quarter Blair Cronin moved to a wing and the forwards played higher leaving space behind and this seemed to open the game up. Daniel Devine controlled the defensive wing while Dean Bartrop started getting involved with some transition off half back and the back-half lead by Tim Baressi were outstanding. We went into half time leading 8.9.57 to 0.6.6. To hold a quality side on their deck goalless for a half was an outstanding effort.

At half time we spoke about resetting and expecting a response from Hillside, and in the 3rd quarter that response came, and came hard. We were well beaten around the footy and our pressure and work rate had dropped. We were now challenged and a lot of the hard work that was done in the first half was now undone.

The last quarter was an arm wrestle, Adam Scott become important as he gave us an outlet to go down the line too and the midfield were able to start getting some repeats. A late goal from outside 50 by Blair Cronin was the sealer to see us get home for a hard earned 12 point away win.

Moving forward we need further education around arresting momentum with our stoppage work and keeping our shape forward of centre.

Going into the break at 6-1 now see us well placed. Lots of hard work and improvement still to go but we have given ourselves a great opportunity moving into the second half of the year.

Round 8 Reserves, Hillside v Tullamarine

Goal Kickers: G. Hope 2, D. Hynninen, D. Browning-Hull

Best Players: D. Browning-Hull, j. Hardman, G. Hope, D. Pearson, K. Karrasch, S. Bennett

Tullamarine started well enough but just didn't get the reward for all the effort and forward 50 entries produced. Our kicking for goal let us down in the first and second quarters, squandering what could have been a half time lead. Unfortunately as per the previous week Tullamarine again let ourselves down in the third quarter, allowing Hillside to take control of the game.

A good last quarter effort coming a little to late.

A positive is we are seeing improvements and expect to start seeing the rewards of this over the second half of the season.
